Flores hadn’t surfed in, let alone won, a championship final since his win at the 2010 Billabong Pipe Masters in Hawaii. Over the past five years, he has bounced up and down the world rankings, including finishing a disappointing 33 in the world last year, a year in which he was suspended for the Billabong Pro Tahiti for lashing out at a WSL official during the season.

On top of all of that, Flores had to miss the previous event at Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa after a nasty freesurfing accident in Indonesia left him with two facial fractures and bleeding on his brain, requiring him to surf with a helmet at Teahupoo.
